Thanksgiving Must Haves!
Thanksgiving definitely falls into the top 3 list of my favorite holidays. Who doesn’t love a holiday that is all about food and family? My family’s Thanksgiving dinner rarely varies from year to year!
MASHED POTATOES: I swear my granny makes the best mashed potatoes. It has taken my sister and I years to figure out how to make them perfectly. Even though we knew what was in them it didn’t matter because it was all made out of her heart so no ingredient amounts have ever been written down. Here are the secrets to the BEST mashed potatoes: TONS of butter and mayonnaise! If you think you added enough butter you probably didn’t also you have to use REAL mayonnaise. Mayo makes the potatoes so creamy and gives them the best flavor. We also put our potatoes in a mixer and let it mix and mash them and that makes them super creamy!
HAM: Most people would say you can’t have Thanksgiving without a turkey but my must have is definitely a ham! My uncle always cooks me a ham and I make him a pumpkin pie. This has been our deal since I could cook. Now I am not sure what all he does to it but I know he puts pineapples on top and I start eating it that morning until that night.
DRESSING: Now I know with each food I say it’s my favorite but listen to me when I tell you that my mom’s Thanksgiving Dressing is my absolutely favorite food and I live for it! A lot of people are sceptical about dressing and that is because it is made differently by everyone you talk to. This is how we make our famous dressing. Now I can’t tell you amounts because we really just eyeball everything and taste as we go, but to get you started here is a list of ingredients.
- Chicken Stock
- Boiled Eggs
- Salt & Pepper
PIES: I always make the pies for Thanksgiving because I personally love to bake. We always have your typical staple holiday pies. I make pecan, pumpkin, chocolate, and sometimes a fruit pie. The crust of the pie is my favorite part and can make or break a pie. HOMEMADE CRUST IS A MUST HAVE! Honestly homemade crust is super easy to make and is so worth any struggle. Also the pie crust does not have to look perfect. People always know a pie is homemade by looking at the crust! All you need is:
- All-purpose flour
- Cold unsalted (very important) butter
- Vegetable shortening
- Ice cold water
Make sure you read the description of the recipe you use to know if it will make a single or double crust. I use my Granny’s pecan pie recipe which I can’t share, however for pumpkin I just use the instructions right on the back of the can haha! If you make a chocolate pudding pie it’s super easy again just follow the pudding recipe on the box. Now a chocolate baked pie can take more work but it is worth it I promise!
Of course I could go on and on with this list; deviled eggs, broccoli rice and cheese casserole, yeast rolls, turkey gravy, and so much more! What is your favorite Thanksgiving must have foods?
