Scholarship Opportunities for College-Bound Students

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with my colleague, Julie Foster, Secondary Principal of Wichita Christian School, and get some feedback on issues facing parents and students in high school.

According to her, “One of the biggest hurdles a junior or senior high school student will face is completing scholarships for college.”

The tip of that iceberg is writing good essays and making time to complete the lengthy applications. Their schedules are packed with practice, projects, homework, games, recitals and so much more!

I am here to tell you…students, you cannot afford to not apply for scholarships.

Most parents cannot fund their child’s college career. A study commissioned by lender Sallie Mae and conducted by Gallup found that the number of families who planned to cover few, if any college costs, had risen while the number of parents expecting to cover more than half of the costs had dropped. A similar survey conducted by Longmire and Company, a higher-education consulting firm, found that 33 percent—the largest percentage of parents—said they planned on contributing less than $5,000 to their child’s college tuition, barely enough to cover four years of textbooks.

So, high school students, I plead with you! Apply for as many scholarships as possible! You never know how much FREE money you could be awarded.
