My Top 5 Tabletop Games and 2 Stinkers!

Always in your stomach and in your skin there was a sort of protest, a feeling that you had been cheated of something that you had a right to. – George Orwell

This is how I feel about winter.  As a Texan, I have come to terms with and accepted our schizophrenic weather patterns, but we always have a winter… eventually.  I know it’s coming. Winter is coming. And when it does, I want all of you to be prepared with the best in table top entertainment! Straight from the game closet of the Bush Household, I bring you my Top 5 Table Top Game reviews & recommendations.

#5 – Dr. Dreadful Scabs & Guts Board Game

This game is fun, interactive, educational, and GROSS!  The boys love it and I do too. You learn about white blood cells on one card, what boogers are made out of on another, and one of the interactive cards is acting out how you take a shower which is hilarious to watch!  There are lots of cards so you can play over and over.

#4 – Pente

The classic game of capture and 5-in-a-row. Win by placing 5 stones in a row or by capturing 5 pairs of your opponent’s stones. Easy to learn and hard to master!  We play this with the kids and on DATE NIGHT! Benny is only 4 and he loves playing and sometimes even wins! (You’ve got to watch the youngest ones. They are sneaky smart!)

#3 – Labyrinth

This game is great for 8 years and up.  Players must find all of their objects and characters while moving carefully through the constantly changing maze, and be the first to make it back to the starting square to win.  Every player’s turn changes the maze! This is a fun strategy game that we all enjoy playing.

Side Note:  I love this company, Ravensburger, and have purchased a lot of their games!

#2 – Gobblet

Based on the familiar concept of Tic-Tac-Toe, Gobblet takes strategy to the next level. This all wooden board game takes just seconds to learn but a lifetime to master. Gobble up, line up four pieces in a row, and win!  I purchased mine at the quaintest coffee shop ever, Waverley’s in Cisco, Texas. I actually gave this as a house warming gift for some 20-something friends of mine. They put it out on the coffee table because the box is so pretty and they have fun playing together too!

And now I reveal to you my #1 all-time favorite game….

#1 – Fluxx (Lots of versions to choose from!)

I love this game so much!  It starts out simple: draw one card and play one card – but New Rule cards quickly make things chaotic. Even the object of the game will often change as you play, as players swap out one Goal card for another.  You can get so many different versions of this game catered to the pop genre you are into.  As a result, this game makes a great gift for the family that loves Marvel or Dr. Who or Star Trek.

We currently have 3 versions: Zombie Fluxx, Pirate Fluxx, and Monty Python Fluxx.

The makers of Fluxx say that you can mix the genres together and make your own game (ie) Zombie Pirate Fluxx and it WORKS!  The possibilities are endless, along with the laughter.

One of the Pirate Flux New Rule cards makesyou have to answer everything in a pirate voice
(until the rule gets changed!) and in the Monty Python version, one of the New Rule cards is to always start your next move with aMonty Python song.  In the Zombie Fluxx deck, one of the New Rules
is when it’s your turn you have to make your best zombie moan or
there’s a penalty!

Now for the stinkers…

Jumanji

This game was a struggle for us to play and we have tried a couple of times.  There are a lot of “roll this, now do this” and “now that you have done this, decode that” and then “now that you have decoded that, can your friends save you”.  I’m tired just thinking about it. The movies are great! Go buy those, but leave this little stinker on the shelf.

Risk

This game isn’t “bad” per se…  I just pray for death when I have to play it.  It takes forever, there’s so much planning and quiet thinking, and eventually I concede and forsake my troops.  I realize this is a personal opinion as I have watched my dad and brother play this game for hours on end and my husband’s family played this at Christmas for 5 hours one night in complete bliss.  However, I was on the couch with my kindle, experiencing a whole different type of coffee saturated happiness and it did not involve toy soldiers!

I hope that this list helps you grow your family game stash or gives you a gift idea for that upcoming birthday.  Personally, I only send board games as gifts to my nephews. It’s like I am forcing them to play together from 5 hours away!  And when we visit, we always break out the games and make great memories. Thanks for reading!
